growth, rain, The Sophia Center for Spirituality

I was just reading some poems about rain, trying to find something that would mirror my feeling. (We are destined for a consistent rainfall all day.) I couldn’t find anything that was even slightly consistent with my sense of the day…which at this hour is just beginning, so difficult to assess. But here I am, listening to a steady light tapping on the roof accompanied by what resembles “white noise” hitting the leaves—neither of which I find distressing.

I love rain for the life it brings to gardens and the determination it gives to me for attending to household chores. Of course, there is also the luxury of nap-time when the chores have been successfully concluded. And there is nothing like a step outside to breathe in the fragrance of the rain and the freshness of the air when it is over.

Yes, sunshine is fine and also necessary for growth, but give me a walk in the rain on a day like this and I will be a happy girl!

air, blessings, breath, depths of life, John Philip Newell, Praying With the Earth, rain, soil, soul, The Sophia Center for Spirituality

amuddyfootprintHere’s a prayer-poem from John Philip Newell that we might might save and pull out on days when the air is heavy with the rain of the night or the scent of the soil that makes one want to go out and dig in the dirt. (Or is it just me?)

It is in the depths of life that we find you, at the heart of this moment, at the centre of our soul, deep in the earth and its eternal stirrings. You are the ground of all being, the Well-Spring of time, Womb of the earth, the Seed Force of stars. And so at the opening of this day we wait not for blessings from afar but for You, the very Soil of our soul, the early freshness of morning, the first Breath of the day.  (Praying with the Earth, p. 18)

balance, companion, fear, flooding, God, mercy, Nan Merrill, possibility, psalm 25, rain, reflect, restored, shining, soul, steadfast love, sun, teach, The Sophia Center for Spirituality, thunder, trust, wake up

araindropIt’s been raining – torrents and thunder-filled sometimes – for the past three days. Yesterday it was if the divine weatherman was playing with us. Drenching downpours were followed by moments of sun peeking out of big gray clouds – then rain again…Even this morning the deck behind our house is puddle-strewn. I look out at the trees, rain soaked as well, but shining now in full sun. What a relief! I never mind the rain but when we begin to hear of flooding streams I know it’s all too much for the farmers and I pray for the balance to be restored. So today it feels as if God is saying, “Wake up! All your sluggishness is washed away! New possibilities await you!” and I sing a response with the psalmist in a translation by Nan Merrill.

To You, O Love, I lift up my soul; O Heart within my heart, in You I place my trust. Let me not feel unworthy; let not fear rule over me. Yes! let all who open their hearts savor You and bless the earth!…Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for through You will I know wholeness; I shall reflect your light both day and night. I know of your mercy, Compassionate One, and of your steadfast love. You have been with me from the beginning. Forgive the many times I have walked away from You choosing to walk alone. With your steadfast love, once again, companion me along your way. (Psalms for Praying, PS. 25)

Beethoven, bird chorus, deer, encounter, my soul longs for you, Ode to Joy, psalm 42, rain, stay awake, streams, The Sophia Center for Spirituality

asingingbirdPerhaps because I had left my window open last night, I was awakened early by the wild chorus of birds outside. I was somewhat grateful because I believe I saw the only patch of blue sky for this day where once again rain is predicted – 100%! The sky is gray now and the birds have completed their concert, but I continue to hear strains of Beethoven playing inside with the lyrics of Joyful, joyful we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love. Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above…

In the stillness outside, the movement inside continues as I turn to the Scriptures where I find the beautifully engaging Psalm 42 urging me on like Beethoven toward a deeper place. As the deer longs for running streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. Athirst is my soul for God, the living God…

And then the question of the day arises from the psalm: When shall I go and behold the face of God? The answer today is quick and clear: At every moment in everyone I encounter – if only I can stay awake! As the clock turns to 7:00AM, I know for certain  my task for the day. And so it begins!

araindropsToday there is a different sound outside my open window, one I don’t remember hearing since the leafing out of the trees was complete in the spring. It’s raining, a steady drenching rain that makes itself known in the sound of its passing through those leaves on its way to ground. Oh, we’ve had showers and the occasional rumbling of thunder with five minute sprinkles but this is different; this is like a long drink of cold water on a hot day. The birds are silent, most likely hunkered down like all of us humans trying to stay dry, but the farmers must be – no doubt – dancing with joy. I’m happy for the farmers and the animals and the tasseling corn. I’m happy for people everywhere who are thirsty and whose water has not been polluted by design or by neglect.

The psalmist wrote that the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof. Some of us seem to have forgotten this truth along the way and need to repent our disregard by becoming more attentive. All of us ought to be mindful of the earth in a way that guarantees a long life for her and all who dwell here. I find today a good day to strengthen my resolve to pay attention as I can’t really ignore the fact that it’s raining. How will you become aware of the amazing gift of God that is our planet, our home?

ears truly listening, Exodus, eyes wide open, God, hearing, Jesus, lightning, messages, Moses, Mount Sinai, rain, seeing, storms, The Sophia Center for Spirituality, thunder

openeyeWe’ve had a couple of powerful storms lately – high winds (tree branches down), thunder, lightning and heavy rain. We have not had the destruction that many places in our country have experienced but it certainly is enough to make sleep difficult in the night! These thoughts were occasioned on this peaceful, sunny morning by the reading from Exodus (19:1- 11, 16-20) where God came down to Mount Sinai in fire with the sound of a trumpet and made the mountain tremble with thunder while Moses was speaking to God and all of the Hebrew people watched in awe. The purpose for this powerful display was (as God had already told Moses three days before) so that the people would not only believe in God but in Moses as well.

Sometimes we would wish for such clear messages – with audio-visual effects from God, but it doesn’t happen that way. God’s messages are mostly more subtle than that so we have to really look and listen from the inside in order to understand. That’s the message of Jesus this morning about the crowds who don’t understand him when he speaks in parables. He says that they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand. He’s actually complimenting the disciples in the end saying, “But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear.” I think of how often I am so wrapped up in my own thoughts that I hear what others are saying but really don’t take it in; I’m not really listening.

May we all go today wherever we are called to go with eyes wide open and ears ready to truly listen so that God’s messages might get through to our hearts!

balance, Bethesda, deepening water, Ezekiel, Jesus, John, pool, psalm 46, rain, Sabbath, sea, The Sophia Center for Spirituality

poolhealingI woke up this morning to the sound of rain; I believe it has been raining throughout the night. My first practical thought was for shoes: what might I wear on my feet to go sloshing through both rain and melting snow so my feet remain dry? There’s still a lot of snow out there so there’s bound to be some flooding (minor, I hope) in our area today. Then I think of my brother whose neighborhood in southern California would dearly love a little rain if only it would come in a measured way so as to avoid erosion and mudslides. It’s all about balance after all.

All the readings talk about water this morning: a vision of deepening water coming from the temple flowing out toward the sea filled with marine life (Ez. 47 & Ps. 46) and then the poor man who has been lying in wait for a healing in the pool of Bethesda for 38 years if only someone would lower him into the water. Thank God Jesus came along! There are two things that always bother me about that gospel scene. First, why did no one notice – or care enough – to help that man in all that time? No matter who he was – how virtuous or dissolute – how could he be ignored for so long??? Secondly, the end of the reading tells us that it was after this incident that enemies began to persecute Jesus (Jn. 5: 1-16) because he had performed this sign, telling the man to pick up his mat and go home, on the Sabbath. It was against the law! Again, balance. Everything about that story reminds me of the Salvation Army whose slogan is Doing the Most Good. It wouldn’t have taken long for them to notice the man and get him into the water any day of the week. I put myself at that pool and wondered what I would have done. I’m still wondering…
