When It's Okay (or Not) to Feed Birds | Audubon

We had tornado warnings last evening but only got torrential rains that seem to have washed away layers of distress and moved us finally into a glorious taste of spring. I thank God for windows this morning! The first blast of beauty that met me was the flowering cherry tree in the west corner that was glorious seen from above (the second floor). Downstairs there was a congregation of colorful birds on the newly washed deck – more variety than we have ever had! In addition to the ever-present yellow of the finches we have a second appearance of Baltimore orioles and, for the first time, a contingent of rose-breasted grosbeaks. They all know where the party is and it is a delight to watch them as they find breakfast, dancing and singing this early in the day to give me courage.

I sit here in the sun, feeling the gentleness of the breeze and imaging Thomas Merton on the tiny porch of his hermitage on mornings just like this one. The leaves on the trees still sparkle with the remnants of the rain as I turn to his words for a way to express praise of this wonderland of creation.

The most wonderful moment of the day is that when creation in its innocence asks permission to “be” once again, as it did on the first morning that ever was…There are drops of dew that show like sapphires in the grass as soon as the morning sun appears, and leaves stir behind the hushed flight of an escaping dove…Today, Father, this blue sky lauds you…The distant blue hills praise you, together with the sweet-smelling air that is full of brilliant light…I too, Father, praise you, with all these my brothers, and they give voice to my own heart and to my own silence. We are all one silence, and a diversity of voices…Here I am. In me the world is present, and you are present. I am a link in the chain of light and of presence…(Thomas Merton: A Book of Hours)

As Morning Breaks, morning, strength, The Sophia Center for Spirituality

I woke up this morning during the first part of the 5:00 hour (which means I was still too asleep to remember exactly what time it was). The sun was already doing its job of drying the grass which is growing at quite a rapid pace and in my head was a sweet morning song – a psalm setting so gentle it lulled me back to sleep for a bit…As morning breaks, I look to you. I look to you, O Lord, to be my strength this day…as morning breaks…as morning breaks.” Just the refrain, offering everything up to God’s strength for whatever is needed every moment of this day. Just enough to take me through until tomorrow. I’m still singing…

Blessed be!

Celtic Benediction, John Philip Newell, light, morning, see, The Sophia Center for Spirituality

amorninglightFor today, a post as short as yesterday’s entry was long. From J. Philip Newell, a prayer:

For the first showings of the morning light and the emerging outline of the day thanks be to you, O God. For earth’s colors drawn forth by the sun and its brilliance piercing clouds of darkness and shimmering through leaves and flowing waters thanks be to you. Show me this day amidst life’s dark streaks of wrong and suffering the light that endures in every person. Dispel the confusions that cling close to my soul that I may see with eyes washed by your grace, that I may see myself and all people with eyes cleansed by the freshness of of the day’s new light.

And the author’s closing counsel: Pray for the coming day and for the life of the world.(Celtic Benediction, p. 40)

dawn, morning, praise, silence, The Sophia Center for Spirituality, Thomas Merton, wakefulness, wisdom

amourningdovesI believe that I understand at this moment what Thomas Merton wrote at dawn on a day a half-century ago about waking up. It is totally silent inside my house; everyone is sleeping still or again. (The coffee is made so someone was up before sunrise.) Outside is a different story. The mourning doves punctuate the conversation that is constant and loud – some would say cacophonous – among all  the other birds large and small. And through it all the rooster reigns, splitting the silence with a voice that carries to the river and back again calling us all to wakefulness. “It is like the first morning of the world,” Merton writes, “when Adam, at the sweet voice of Wisdom, awoke from nonentity and knew her…” Only in silence, I think, is it possible to have such an experience. And so I will dress and go into the day, carrying with me the pure sounds of praise in the natural world, hoping to know the wakefulness that is available to me this day.

centering prayer, constantly, Divine Presence, judgment, meditation, morning, Psalm 105, The Sophia Center for Spirituality

acenteringSynonyms for constantly: continuously, persistently, always, again and again, frequently, repeatedly, over and over…(You get the picture, yes?)

The first verse of today’s lectionary psalm calls to us: Look to the Lord in his strength; seek to serve him constantly. (PS 105:4) That adverb strikes a chord in me immediately. I think of the days I am very busy or late leaving for work in the morning and find myself grumpy or less effective during the day and wondering why. Then I realize that I did not take the time for my 20 minutes of centering prayer, an essential part of my morning routine. No kidding! It really makes a difference. It’s like taking vitamins or doing physical exercise.

Centering prayer is probably the simplest (although not always easy) meditation practice of all. It just requires the practitioner to sit down, make an intention to be in the Divine Presence and let go of thoughts. As the practice has deepened in me over the last eleven years, I have come to recognize the ability to let go of the habit of judgment – of myself, of other people and of situations or circumstances that used to bother me. Why would I not consent to God’s action in this brief pause each day? Good question as I prepare to sit and set my timer…

glory, God, grace, joy, morning, privilege, see, spirit, team, The Sophia Center for Spirituality, wisdom, Wisdom School

amorningcoffeeview6:37AM: Very dark outside. Very cold in my bedroom. A day to hunker down under a mountain of blankets, one might say. But I’m awake and moving with thoughts of gratitude for the promise of two days of work that is not burdensome. Rather I look forward to the creativity of planning with my “Wisdom Team” for the events that help us and those who participate in these retreats to go deeper into life in the Spirit. The work is greater than anything we could conjure ourselves and it is always a joy and privilege to see where it takes us. Today is a new beginning and I find myself singing silently a familiar chant:

Pour out through me, God of glory, Lord of grace, that all may see Thy eternal radiant face.

Alan Cohen, circle of humanity, God, morning, pray, prayer, priority, reflection, The Sophia Center for Spirituality

asunsetprayer

Alan Cohen begins his morning reflection for today with an anonymous, well-known adage that says: Anyone who is too busy to pray is too busy. He ends with a prayer that addresses God directly and with a similarly clear message. I think this “twinning” of thoughts is appropriate and sufficient for today. I call us each to offer this prayer and in so doing to connect us to this circle of humanity for the good of all.

You are my first priority. Knowing you makes all the difference in my life and my world. Knowing you is knowing myself. Be with me today, that I may be with you always.

Bright Sunlight Rays Wide Desktop BackgroundHere is one more prayer of praise from Macrina Wiederkehr, the text I will pray this morning with my colleagues as we gather for another day together.

Anointed by your morning light, I lift up my spirit to receive the gift of this new day. Open my eyes to the beauty that surrounds me that I may walk through this day with the kind of awareness that calls forth grateful living. In all of creation let me see the brightness of your face. Shine in my heart and on my life, filling me with joy, creativity, hope and laughter. Draw me into the radiant glory of your presence and into the small lights of those with whom I live and work. Inspire me to take time for those who are discouraged. May I live with the kind of presence that enables others to feel at home. Great Dawn of God, hear my prayer.

Have a blessed day!

Ancient Songs Sung Anew, brighter heart, clearer mind, darkness, health, instrument of praise, Jesus, light, light of God, mercy, morning, psalm 67, sunshine, truth, window

awindowlightWe haven’t had much morning sunshine lately but the light of dawn does come early now. As a first task this morning I felt the need to make a list of things to remember – contacts that are overdue from email, calls that I haven’t returned, “homework” for upcoming events…The last entry is something that generally only occurs to me with the morning sun: I must wash my bedroom window. How much more needful it appears when the sun shines! What a difference a little Windex and elbow grease would make.

In the gospel today Jesus says that he came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes may not remain in darkness. He also says he didn’t come to condemn the world but to save it. It’s only if we see the truth and reject it – maybe through laziness – that we get into trouble. While I know that speaking of my window as analogous to the light of God in the world is a totally ridiculous stretch, it does make me consider whether I am willing to make the effort to see clearly to the world outside of myself.

Psalm 67 calls out today from Ancient Songs Sung Anew a prayer that similarly lifts me toward the world outside. O God, the psalmist cries, have mercy upon us and bless us with the light streaming from your face. And so that here on earth we know and walk in your ways, restore us back to health again. May every person, every creature become an instrument of praise to you.

The sun is up over the mountain now – fully streaming toward the house. I can hardly see the tree beyond my window, so harsh are the remains of winter’s storms. It seems today must be the day to clear away the impediments to the light, both inner and outer, so that tomorrow may find me with a clearer mind, a lighter, brighter heart.

anew, Holiday, morning, Rabindranath Tagore, see, The Sophia Center for Spirituality

Relaxing young child in sunset

It’s always a little jarring after a holiday – especially when a long weekend has been dedicated to retreat or vacation or some other “out of the ordinary” activity. It feels like Monday today when it is really already Tuesday. Add to that the confusion in nature in our neighborhood: the first frost (and/or 33 degrees F.) in almost mid-October but the trees not yet showing their autumn colors! For all this, there is a short piece of advice from Rabindranath Tagore that seems appropriate for this day (or any morning, really):

Do not say, “It is morning,” and dismiss it with a name of yesterday. See it for the first time as a newborn child that has no name.
