Last evening I went to the Baccalaureate worship service for graduating seniors of the high school where I spent my first thirteen years as a teacher. It took place in the largest church in our area. (We used to call it “The Stardust Ballroom” because seating is in the round and there is recessed lighting throughout – a very “modern” venue in the 1970s.) Although the population of the school has diminished greatly over the years, the church was quite crowded with families that probably included some of my students who are now celebrating their grandchildren’s commencement. I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the service which ran like clockwork and included excellent (and brief) speakers for welcoming and thanking those in attendance, great lectors and beautiful music suitable to the youth but also very reverent. Two of the musical selections, solos by members of the class, were actually jaw-dropping. The first was a lovely young lady with a voice bigger than she was and then a young man, accompanied by a great cellist from his class, who sang the traditional and well-loved Latin hymn, Panis angelicus, which reached the entire church simply by the power of his voice. I was told that he has received a full scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music.

For a person like me whose life revolves around spirituality, the maturity, enthusiasm and apparent gratitude for the faith-based schooling of these young people was a real treat. The bishop’s words to the young people – and to all of us – were framed around the theme of falling in love. He urged them to fall in love with life, to look for what would be real and lasting on their journey. In conclusion, he offered a reflection by Jesuit Pedro Arrupe, a great lover of life and of God. It is my fervent hope for these young people.

Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in Love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Angelic Doctor

Today is the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), one of the most celebrated theologians of all times, held in the esteemed title of Doctor of the Church. Not only was he a theologian and philosopher but he was also a very devout man and priest who wrote beautiful prayers and hymns. Fr. Don Miller (Franciscan Media) captures the essence of his genius, I think, when he comments that “unity, harmony and continuity of faith and reason, of revealed and natural truth pervades his writing.”

The most striking insight of this brilliant man came, it seems, three months before his death. His last work, the Summa theologiae, a compendium of Catholic theology, was unfinished; he stopped writing after celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273. When asked why, he replied, “I cannot go on…All I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me.”

I find myself feeling deeply compassionate for this brilliant, holy man who had worked all his life to understand the workings of God and the universe only to find at the end of his life that holy mystery cannot be captured by the mind but only lived in wonder and awe in one’s whole being. My compassion moves to joy for the fullness of what he had seen that was, paradoxically, the completion of his life’s work.

Taste and See

It seems that in many of the Christian denominations the most often referenced source for hymns is the psalms. That seems logical because the psalms are always to be sung when they appear in worship services, at least in Roman Catholic liturgy. I have been sitting here for nearly a half hour now, surfing the internet for a good rendition of the song Taste and See by James Moore, based on Psalm 34. I have not been satisfied with anything I have heard although the tune and words are quite adequately represented by each example. I have come to the conclusion that it our heart-filled prayer in the singing of the hymn (myself with a congregation) that moves me so much every time – especially if it is sung during the procession to receive. I would still recommend a visit to YouTube but, since it all began with my reading of the psalm this morning, I will post those words that are, in themselves, a prayer full of trust.

I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall ever be in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the Lord; the lowly will hear me and be glad. [R] Glorify the Lord with me.
