aprayerplantSometimes when life feels very complicated I like to find some simplicity somewhere. This morning, since light had already arrived at this task before I did, I looked up and saw that my prayer plant had found a way to untangle herself from the tight configuration her leaves had been living in since I transplanted her a few weeks ago. She seemed happy to spread her arms in praise. That moment was enough to call me to do the same.

The feeling was deepened when I opened to the words of Thomas Merton who offered me the following message from his book, Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander:

You ask of me nothing else than to be content that I am your Child and your Friend, simply to accept your friendship because it is your friendship. This friendship is Spirit. You have called me to be repeatedly born in the Spirit, repeatedly born in light, in knowledge, in unknowing, in faith, in awareness, in gratitude, in poverty, in presence, and in praise.

Such a wide-ranging invitation offered to all who consent simply to accept humble friendship with God!

content, Daniel Ladinsky, looks, physical features, St. Catherine of Siena, The Sophia Center for Spirituality

amirrorHere’s a word from St. Catherine of Siena, in translation by Daniel Ladinsky. It would be wonderful if those of us who are disappointed in any physical features that we have inherited are not of our liking. Hooray for all those content with their looks!

What is it you want to change? Your hair, your face, your body?

Why?

For God is in love with all those things and He might weep when they are gone.

All the Way to Heaven, content, Jan Phillips, speak truth to power, St. Catherine of Siena, The Sophia Center for Spirituality, way, witnesses

acatherineofsienaI did not post anything over the last two days. While it is true that the weekend was full in a wonderful way with our long-awaited concert and workshop with the extraordinary Jan Phillips, I had every intention of attending to this morning practice. Unfortunately the internet was not cooperating. Thus I missed my chance on her feast to speak about Catherine of Siena – one of my favorites in a long line of holy women who have proved worthy of sainthood. One could begin the litany of her life with the fact that she was the 25th child born to her family! My admiration comes, however, from the chronicle of her friendship with God that gave her the courage to speak truth to power and which led her to a central role in the end of the “Avignon Captivity” – a 70-year period in the 14th century of papal exile in France.

It is perhaps an ironic connection that Catherine’s feast fell during Jan’s visit. The first of Jan’s CDs of original songs is entitled “All the Way to Heaven” which comes from a quote by Catherine who proclaimed that all the way to heaven is heaven. I wonder how many of us would agree with Jan and Catherine about this. Both of them have lived as active witnesses, shouting those words through their actions, teaching us that it is not the content but the way we face what happens that matters. Jan concluded the day on Saturday with a song in three parts, each added to the one before that kept repeating throughout. Although you probably have to hear the song to make sense out of that description, it might be enough to see the lyrics in order to see the point of how she (and I believe Catherine) have approached life and found heaven on earth.

1. Because the One I love lives inside you, I lean as close to you as I can.

2. Namaste, I bow to you. Namaste, I bow to you.

3. Shalom to you, shalom to all, shalom around the world.

No Catastrophe Here!

awakeIt doesn’t pay to oversleep by two hours after normal rising time. This morning upon deciding that 5:15 was too early to abandon my bed, I went back to sleep for what seemed just a few minutes. My phone display, however, disagreed by showing 8:05! That spells disaster on a day when I planned to cook breakfast for an overnight guest  who was due at a meeting at 9:00. I guess it was obvious when I arrived in the kitchen five minutes later that I had just awakened; the smiles that greeted me witnessed to my groggy state. But I managed scrambled eggs and some welcome conversation. When Cathy left, however, I quickly got into “zoom” mode and practically fell over myself trying to do four absolutely-necessary-this-morning tasks at the same time. Suddenly I realized that no one was observing me with a stopwatch – the pressure was all mine! – and I began to breathe a little more consciously. I have now accomplished at least three of those necessary tasks and it’s only 12:53PM! Not so bad…and I am calmly approaching the rest of the day.

The psalm response from today’s lectionary readings made me smile as I turned to writing. The last verses included these words: Hide me in the shadow of your wings, Lord…(such a snuggly, comforting image of today)…on waking, I shall be content in your presence. Ps. 17:8,15) With a bit of hustle and bustle in between the hiding under God’s wings and waking up to the presence that is always with me, I can honestly say that today is a very good day!

activity, balance, breathe, content, daily living, find peace, forget concerns, God of the seasons, pray, rest, sacred space, set yourself free, silence, The Sophia Center for Spirituality, Thomas Merton

ameditationspaceWe inhabitants of the Northeast United States spent November and December in a mixture of gratitude for warm days and apprehension for a time when the winter would appear with a vengeance. Global warning had seemed to favor us with record high temperatures while predicting a serious plummeting to follow. Well, now it’s January and the other side of the coin has shown itself. The lovely “valley of opportunity” where I live has been spared the 21 inches of snow that fell just 80 miles to our north but frigid temperatures and high winds have forced caution in travel and consideration of cancellation of events. In the frustration of the uncertainty resulting from the weather’s control of my schedule, I am reminded of Thomas Merton’s advice for daily living – perfect as I face the second half of this week.

There should be at least a room, or some corner where no one will find you and disturb you or notice you. You should be able to untether yourself from the world and set yourself free, loosing all the fine strings and strands of tension that bind you, by sight, by sound, by thought, to the presence of other men. “But thou, when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret…” Once you have found such a place, be content with it and do not be disturbed if a good reason takes you out of it. Love it, and return to it as soon as you can, and do not be quick to change it for another…Let there be a place somewhere in which you can breathe naturally, quietly, and not have to take your breath in continuous short gasps. A place where your mind can be idle, and forget its concerns, descend into silence, and worship the Father in secret.

When I am too busy to remember the necessary balance of activity and rest, I bless the “God of the seasons” for an opportunity to surrender and find peace in the gift of winter time.
