I have often been heard to say things like “This is one of my favorite psalms!” or “I love this reading! It’s one of my favorite gospel passages!” People just smile now and wonder which psalms have not made it into my hit parade or when Jesus has said something that I don’t find helpful. I suppose we all have our little idiosyncrasies and, if we’re so blessed, also have persevering people in our circle of friends.
Today is truly one of those days when I cannot help myself in response to a lectionary text that is clearly one of the gems of the Hebrew Scriptures. I have it on good authority that I am not alone in my praise for the sixth chapter of Micah. Actually, that’s enough to say to elicit a response from many. I say, “Micah 6:8” and hear back some translation of the following:
This is what the Lord asks of you, only this: to act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God.
What more need I say? Definitely, when it comes to the Old Testament: “My favorite!” Oh, but then there is Isaiah 43:1-5…
